Writing about fishermen and fish

Portfolio Task 3

The graph shows the number of fishermen in millions by region, and the table shows World top ten exporters of fish in 2000, so in the next paragraph I am going to write about both of them.

First of all, there was a huge increase from 11 million to 26 million in Asia throughout the period from 1970 to 2000. Second, the number of fishermen decreased rapidly from 12 million to 4 million in 30 years. Third, in North America number of fishermen doubled to reach 15 million while it was stable in South America at 7 million from 1970 to 2000.

The two most popular countries for exporting fish were Thailand and Norway while Indonesia and South Korea were the least popular.

In conclusion, I would say that Thailand was the highest exporter of fish and Norway is the second and most of the countries are Asian.

Influence of media

Portfolio task 4

The media has a great influence in changing people’s ideas so in the next paragraph I am going to talk about the people who agree and disagree with this.

People who agree that the media can change people ideas are easy to convince that everything they hear or see is totally correct and that depends on the people who you discuss with. First of all, if you talk with a group that wants to deal with drugs you will be with them because all of them want it. Second, killing is a bad thing to do but if you have read a book or saw a TV show about killing you might be more likely to kill.

Other people disagree with the idea of media can change their ideas about something because they think that if you compare what it says in the media with religion they will see a big difference so they will not do it. Second, culture and tradition plays a role for people to think about copying the best habits for you.

In my conclusion, influence can be either from religion or media but we have to think if it is good or not.

Visitors to Theme Parks

The graph shows the number of visitors to theme park around the world in 2000. In the next paragraph I am going to talk about the visitors in 5 different parks.

Firstly the number of visitors to Disneyland increased from 26 million to 42 million between 1995 – 2005. In addition Eurodisney visitors have increased from 12 million to 18 million in 5 years but then decreased to 11 million in 2005. On the other hand, Alton Tower visitors have a slight increase between 1995 – 2005 which was 3 million to 6 million in 10 years. In contrast, the visitors in Busch Gardens have trebled from 5 million in 1995 to 21 million in 2005. Finally, the highest number of visitors were in Disneyland with 42 million while the lowest were in Alton Tower with only 6 million.

The table shows most of the visitors were from North America while the second highest were from Europe. On the other hand Oceania comes in the last order of visitors to theme parks around the world in 2000.

In conclusion, I would say that North America have the highest number of visitors to theme parks while Oceania have the lowest.

 Portfolio Task 2

Problem and solution for moving to another country

People all over the world travel to different places because nowadays you can travel by air and go overseas using ships for either education or work. In the next paragraph I am going to talk about problems that people might have when they move and some solutions for them.

First of all, some people might have a big problem because they don’t know the language, but the solution is to learn the basics of the language you want. Second, culture can play a role in the problems such as life style, food and clothing. The solution for that is to learn and respect their culture before you go. Third, rules and regulations are not the same in all countries, so you will have to read books or use the internet to know everything you want about their rules before you go. Finally, safety and security can be a big problem in a lot of foreign countries. That’s why you have to both search and know the place or find other people like you such as Muslims or Arab people or some of your own nationality.

In conclusion, I would say that people can travel to any place if they know the language and the culture so it will be easier for them to enjoy their life in the other country.

Films shown and cinema attendance in Britain and Australia

Portfolio Task -1

Films shown and cinema attendance in Britain and Australia

The bar graph shows the origin of films which are shown in Britain and Australia in 2000, then the line graph tells us the number of people who attend the cinema in both countries.

In Britain the most shown films were the US films by nearly 75% while it was nearly 70% in Australia. British films took a percentage of 20% in the UK and only 5% in Australia. In Australia nothing but Australian films are shown and it is only 10%. Other films took a percentage of 2% and 16% for Britain and Australia. For the cinema attendance it fluctuated for Britain from 1980 to 1990. Then it ends up with a dramatic increase in 2000 by 150 million people, while it fluctuated for Australia from 1980 to 1984 then it leveled out to 1990. The number of people after that increased rapidly to reach 90 million in 2000.

In conclusion, I would say that the US films have more audience than any other films which leads us to know that in 2000 the number of people who attend the cinema increased to reach 150 million in Britain and 90 million in Australia.

Hamdan’s presentation

I am going to talk about Hamdan’s presentation which was talking about nuclear power. First of all, Hamdan started to introduce the nuclear power which was good to know that it can help us a lot in the future if we use it for good things such as chargers and for cars, not for bad things such as weapons and wars. Second of all, he planned the presentation very well and it was relevant to show us about the nuclear power. Thirdly, his attitude and his body language were very good in the presentation because he seemed to be sure about what he was presenting to us. Another thing that helped him was that he makes a good eye contact with the audience. Finally we can see that in the end of his presentation he answered every question for the audience which tells us that Hamdan was well prepared for the presentation

Reflection 1

                Reflection on first meeting

For our first meeting I think that it was very good. It was organized because the chairman opened the meeting in a very good way by talking about the problem and how to solve it. He organized the work by sharing the work with us. The secretary was writing every single word that we agreed on and his ideas were very helpful. The participant helped us to organize the meeting well; and the things that were good about him were that he studied the problem well and agreed with us on the good ways to solve the problem. In this meeting we learnt how to solve the problems by listening to other people's ideas.

Parking problem

Minutes
Date: 3/7/11
Venue: W007

Group Members:
Chair: Mohamed Al-Qubaisi
Minutes Taker: Mohammed Salem
Participants: Ibrahim

Agenda:
1 Build underground parking under the buildings.
2 Increase the use of public transport such as buses and taxis, and bicycles in winter.
3 Special parking buildings should be built.
4 People living in places with parking problems, and who own more than one car, should get rid of the extra cars to avoid congestion.
5 Parking cars by paying fees.

Objectives:
The main objective is to find solution for the parking congestion in Abu Dhabi city. It has become hard to find a parking spot. Some efforts have been made to help find a solution for this problem but still, congestion still exists.

The chairman, Mohamed Al-Qubaisi, opened the meeting at 16:43.

1 Mohammed Salem suggested that underground parking should be built under each building in crowded areas. But Mohamed Al-Qubaisi denied the idea because he thinks that it is hard to build them now. He said that if they were built while constructing the buildings, they would have been of great use. Ibrahim agreed with Mohamed Al-Qubaisi’s point of view.

2 Ibrahim said that people should use public transport, such as buses and taxis as their main way of transportation. Both Mohamed Al-Qubaisi and Mohammed Salem agreed but they said that it’s not a way that citizens would prefer knowing that every house owns more than two cars. But, Ibrahim said that we should try applying the idea and see the feedback of the citizens.

3 We all agreed about having car parking buildings built in every residential area to serve people living there. With having a special card only for citizens of the area, so that other people from different areas won’t take advantage of the parking.

4 We also agreed that citizens, who own more than one car and live in crowded areas, should get rid of the extra cars to avoid congestion. Also some people own parking spots under the building but are lazy to park it under the building so they park it outside, and that should be solved also. Because it is known that many people leave their cars in one parking spot for more than a month and it’s a reason of congestion.

5 Mohammed Salem started discussing the idea of making the parking in crowded congested areas by paying a specified amount of money for parking tickets for each area depending on how crowded it is. However, Ibrahim replied saying that the fees should be specified on the amount of time the car is parked, not on how crowded the area is. Mohammed Al-Qubaisi said it is not fair to take money on parking lots, so he said that their ideas were good but the fees for parking spots should be for a specified period of time. After that, they all agreed on the idea.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we think that underground parking is a great idea and would highly reduce the congestion rate. However, the government should apply new rules forcing the investors to build underground parking. The government should also advise other people to use public transportation to reduce the congestion rate. We think that public transport solution is also a good idea and of a great advantage. However, people here aren’t interested in public transport.  Also having parking buildings in residential areas is a good idea, but rules should be enforced strictly to make sure no people park in there except the citizens of the area. Finally we think if they applied fees on parking spots, it might somehow solve this issue by limiting the time each car can park.

Tips for presenters

 1.  Don’t memorize your presentation, make brief notes to guide you.

      2. Practice many times.

3.  Relax, take a deep breath, and wait until the audience is quite.

4.  Speak loudly and clearly, and use your voice for stress and emphasis.

5.  Use gestures to show meaning. Make them slowly and clearly.

6.  Use simple visual aids that everyone can see.

7.  Make eye contact with the audience as you speak.

8.  Don’t say, “Finished.” Or “That’s all. “ Smile and say “Thank you.”

9.  Think about how you can do better next time.

I think that the two important tips are (4) and (7).

introducing Hamdan

He was born in 1992; June 12. He is 18 years old. He was born in Abu Dhabi and he is currently living in Abu Dhabi; he has 7 brothers and 3 sisters. His hobbies are playing video games and reading; recently he has grown an interest in music which as a result let him choose to play the violin and it has as well become one of his hobbies that he enjoys a lot.
Once it comes to ambitions he looks pretty far; his ambition is to actually try his best to achieve something that will change a lot of things in our world, but if that won’t happen he believes that it was not meant to happen.
He has visited several countries; he has been in Japan, Greece, America and Saudi Arabia. His best holiday was when he went to Japan with his school since it was a once in a life time experience; he was as well one of the chosen students to go to Japan. It was last year and the trip was for 2 weeks.
He thinks that the best thing about ADMC is that he is capable of skipping the foundation year by taking up the challenge exam. The worst thing about ADMC is that at times we finish classes in the evening.
His motto is: Regret won’t solve anything but instead keep looking forward and hope that this time you will do it right
